Trump and Congress in budget lockdown over Mexican wall

US President Donald Trump reiterated his plans to build a wall on the border with Mexico over the weekend, despite not yet having the money to pay for it.

Trump took to Twitter on Sunday to highlight his promise, made during his election campaign, to build a wall between the two countries. He tweeted:

The White House is under pressure to sign a funding bill from congress, which may not include money for the wall. However, without signing the bill offered, funding for Trump’s government will run out at midnight on the 28th April, his 100th day in government.

White House budget director, Mick Mulvaney, told Fox News Sunday that they are asking Trump for his “priorities.” The attorney general, Jeff Sessions, also seemed uncertain over Trump’s plans over the weekend:

“He’ll make those decisions,” Sessions told ABC’s This Week, adding that he was “not engaged in the budget negotiations.”

Congress is heavily divided over the President’s wall policy, with Republicans from border states and districts saying the wall would be an expensive measure with limited benefits. Democrats are strongly against the policy, labelling it foolhardy and ineffective.
