Twitter suspends Britain First leaders in new crackdown

The social media platform is cracking down on extreme content.

Under the terms of its revised anti-abuse rules, Twitter (NYSE: TWTR) has suspended the leader and deputy leader of the far-right group Britain First.

The group’s main account, along with Paul Golding and Jayda Fransen’s personal accounts, were all suspended on Monday when the new anti-abuse rules came into effect.

The tech giant is working on its two-year plan to crack down on inappropriate content and behaviour.

“We hope our approach and upcoming changes, as well as our collaboration with the Trust and Safety Council, show how seriously we are rethinking our rules and how quickly we’re moving to update our policies and how we enforce them,” said a spokesperson from Twitter earlier this year.

Twitter’s chief executive, Jack Dorsey said: “We see voices being silenced on Twitter every day. We’ve been working to counteract this for the past 2 years. We prioritized this in 2016. We updated our policies and increased the size of our teams. It wasn’t enough,”

“In 2017 we made it our top priority and made a lot of progress. Today we saw voices silencing themselves and voices speaking out because we’re *still* not doing enough,” he added.

The new rules state that users cannot affiliate themselves with organisations that promote violence against civilians, nor is the use of “hateful images or symbols” allowed in user profiles or biographies.

Twitter has come under fire recently for not doing enough to crack down on hate speech on the social media platform. It was criticised for failing to act on Fransen’s anti-Muslim videos that were posted online. The same video was then retweeted by Donald Trump.

The company also plan to take action against tweets that condone violence.

“We realize that a more aggressive policy and enforcement approach will result in the removal of more content from our service. We are comfortable making this decision,” said an email, that was leaked from the tech company.
