Shares continued to fall as the social media giant is under investigation.

Facebook is set to hire a further 3000 employees in its “customer operations team”, in order to review content to prevent hate speech, child abuse and self-harm spreading across the site.

The social networking giant has been at the centre of several controversies of late, in which cases of murder and suicide were broadcast live through their Live Stream function. Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said it had been “heartbreaking” to see Live Stream used this way, confirming that 3,000 new employees to check content.

In a post on his Facebook, Zuckerberg said:

“We’re going to make it simpler to report problems to us, faster for our reviewers to determine which posts violate our standards and easier for them to contact law enforcement if someone needs help.

“Just last week, we got a report that someone on Live was considering suicide. We immediately reached out to law enforcement, and they were able to prevent him from hurting himself”, he added.

The additional staff are on top of the 4,500 extra staff already announced to combat the problem. Zuckerberg said the company was “working to make these videos easier to report so we can take the right action sooner”, and that it is in the process of “building better tools to keep [the Facebook] community safe.”
