Rumours surrounding the iPhone 8 have been in abundance so far this year. New reports have revealed that Apple’s new phone will be the biggest ever made and will include a 3D sensor, for some form of augmented reality.
According to a new report from Nikkei Asian Review, the ten-year Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) phone will stretch across 5.8 inches of the front of the screen – 0.3 inches larger than the iPhone 7 Plus.
The phone will have a curved display and remove the bezels that wrap around the display on the front of the phone, allowing the screen to take up most of the handset’s size and save space.
Rumours also include the possibility of a special “function area” at its bottom, which will allow easy access to certain features and mimicking the behaviour of the MacBook Pro’s Touch Bar.
A 3D sensor for the smartphone is also said to be in the works. A Barclays (LON:BARC) report claims that the 3D camera will use the Time of Flight method, which will emit a signal at the object in front of it, and calculate the bounce off. Based on the bounces, the new phone will build a 3D image of the object in front of it.
The second possible method is the Structured Light method, which projects a pattern onto the object in front of it, and then it distorts the object into pieces to calculate the shape of the object and make a 3D image accordingly.
Apple reportedly has 1,000 engineers in Israel working solely on the augmented reality, as the Apple hopes to bet big on AR.
One thing that reports are definite on is that the iPhone 8 will be the most expensive smartphone Apple has ever released.
The new phone will be released in September of this year and is expected to be the most radical re-design they have had in accordance to the ten tear iPhone anniversary.
