A soft Brexit will “kill” chances for a trade deal with US

Donald Trump has defended the policy.

Donald Trump has warned that Theresa May’s plans for a soft Brexit will “probably kill” chances for a trade deal between the UK and US.

In an interview with the Sun, the US President criticised May’s approach to Brexit and said that it was not what the British people voted for and he “would have done it much differently. I actually told Theresa May how to do it, but she didn’t listen to me.”

“If they do a deal like that, we would be dealing with the European Union instead of dealing with the UK, so it will probably kill the deal,” added Trump, in a move that undermines May’s attempt to get support for her Chequers deal.

In the same interview, Trump continued to undermine May’s efforts and said that Boris Johnson, who resigned earlier this week, would make “a great prime minister.”

“I think he’s got what it takes,” the US President added.

Trump also went on to criticize London Mayor, Sadiq Kahn. According to Trump, Khan had done a “terrible job” surrounding last year’s terror attacks in the capital.

In response, Khan said that it was “interesting” that he “is not criticising the mayors of other cities,” who have also experienced terror attacks.

The London mayor went on to defend his decision to allow the giant Trump baby inflatable to fly over the city during Trump’s UK visit.

“The idea that we limit the right to protest because it might cause offence to a foreign leader is a slippery slope,” he said.

On Thursday night the prime minister hosted Trump for a black-tie dinner at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire.

Trump said he had “probably never developed a better relationship” with May on his first UK trip as President.

Trump will also visit Scotland on his trip, where demonstrations are also planned.
