Trump prepared to apologise for retweeting Britain First – “I know nothing about them”

Donald Trump has defended the policy.

Donald Trump has said he is prepared to apologise for re-tweeting posts from the far-right group, Britain First.

The US President said on ITV’s Good Morning Britain that he knew “nothing” about the group when he shared some of their online content in November last year.

“If you are telling me they’re horrible people, horrible, racist people, I would certainly apologise if you’d like me to do that,” he said on the show.

Trump told presenter Piers Morgan that he shared the three videos due to his opposition to Islamist terrorism.

“I know nothing about them and I know nothing about them today other than I read a little bit,” he said. “Perhaps it was a big story in Britain, perhaps it was a big story in the UK, but in the United States it wasn’t a big story.

“They had a couple of depictions of radical Islamic terror. It was done because I am a big believer in fighting radical Islamic terror. This was a depiction of radical Islamic terror.”

Trump’s sharing of the videos sparked a major backlash, with Theresa May tweeting that it was “wrong” to share the hateful videos.

The videos shared included a man being pushed from the top of a building during the Egypt riots in 2013.

Morgan said in the interview that he felt it was “right and proper” that the US President should apologise, saying: “I think this is a significant climbdown by the president”.

When questioned on his trip to the UK and the various opposition that the President would have to face, Trump said: “I hadn’t heard about banning, I think a lot of the people in your country like what I stand for, [including] tough borders.”

The interview, held in Davos, will be broadcast 10 pm on 28 January on ITV.
