The GMB union has given its backing to Owen Smith in the Labour leadership contest, after 60 percent of their 43,419 members endorsed Jeremy Corbyn’s challenger.
Corbyn retains the support of most British unions however, including Unite, Aslef and the Communication Workers Union. Today, Corby also gained the support of the second largest union, Unison.
Unison general secretary Dave Prentis said: “Jeremy Corbyn retains the backing of a majority of Unison’s Labour-supporting members. That’s why the committee supported his nomination again.”
Corbyn lost a vote of no confidence soon after the referendum result in June, sparking a leadership challenge against his leadership. Ballot papers will be sent out in the post to Labour Party members on the 22nd August, with the result to be announced on the 24th September in Liverpool.
