Whilst 2016 has seen many surprises (Brexit and Trump to name two), Forbes’ annual list of overpaid actors remained more predictable.
Actor Johnny Depp yet again achieved ‘victory’ in the list, topping it for the second year in a row.
The official Forbes list is calculated by comparing the box office revenue of an actor’s films with the amount on their respective pay cheques. The list considers the last three films an actor starred in before June 2016, excluding the titles with a limited release, or those where roles were minor.
Depp topped the list for the second year running following his film “Alice Through The Looking Glass“. This big-budget film cost a huge $170 million to produce, bringing in only $300 million to the global box-office.
Depp’s film “Mortdecai” also helped him top the list, which returned just $2.8 dollars for every $1 he was paid.
Other stars to feature on the 2016 list were Bradley Cooper, Leonardo Di Caprio and George Clooney.
Julia Roberts was the only woman to feature, possibly a reflection of the significant pay gap between the amount paid to male and female stars in Hollywood.
The list does not necessarily represent films that did poorly at the box office. Di Caprio’s featured eighth on the list following “The Revenant”, a film which smashed the box-office, landed him an Oscar and naming him the highest earning actor.
