Tesco launches same day delivery across every UK city

Tesco has launched same day delivery for groceries across 300 stores, reaching 99 percent of UK households.

The service is already available in London and the South East, but will now be rolled out in more remote areas of the UK such as the Shetland Islands and Cornwall.

Customers of the retail giant will be able to order their groceries by 1 pm and have their shopping delivered from 7 pm. The service will cost between £3 and £9 but will be offered free for a limited period for members of its delivery saver service.

“Customers tell us they like getting their shopping delivered quickly and conveniently, and with our same day delivery service they can now order by lunch to get their shopping delivered for their evening meal.” said Adrian Letts, managing director of Tesco Online.

“We’ve seen the service grow in popularity since we launched it in London and the South East so we’re really excited to be rolling it out to customers nationwide.” he added.

Tesco said it had experienced an 18 percent growth in demand for its existing same day delivery service so far this year.

AmazonFresh has plans to introduce same day delivery of groceries, following their takeover of Whole Foods last month, but it is not yet available in areas outside of London.

Amazon Prime Now customers will have the option of having their baskets delivered within 60 minutes for £6.99 – in selected areas.

“We look forward to adding more stores and reaching more customers in the future,” said Prime Now EU director Mariangela Marseglia.

Analysts at Shore Capital said: “With its low market share and especially shallow reach in London and the South East, through Amazon Prime customers, the Morrison brand can gain welcome extension,”
