The Jockey Club entered its eighth successive year of growth in 2016, with turnover hitting a record £191.5 million.

Turnover rose 4.5 percent to the record figure, with operating profits up to £22.6 million from £21.9 million. The Jockey Club also donated more to prize money than ever before, at £20.6 million.

The Jockey Club is one of the largest racecourse operators in the UK, including Aintree, Newmarket and Epsom Downs. It was founded in 1750 and also runs the National Std, Jockey Club Live and charity Racing Welfare.

“It is fantastic to stage events that see the best horses and the experiences we offer bringing enjoyment to so many millions of people each year,” chief executive Simon Bazalgette said.

“That helped make 2016 a good year financially, and meant we were able to support our sport even more than the year before.”

Bazalgette also welcomed reforms to the racing levy, which may continue to boost the group’s revenues. The new scheme, replacing previous legislation from 1961, will ensure a statutory financial return to the sport from all firms who accept bets on British racing from customers based in Britain. Operators must pay 10 percent of gross profits from bets made by British customers on British racing after the first £500,000.
