Samsung delays Galaxy Fold amid screen breakages

Samsung has pushed back the launch of its Galaxy Fold device after reports of various early reviewer’s phone screens breaking.

The electronics conglomerate had been planning on launching the device on Friday, however it announced on Tuesday it is now pushing back its launch.

The Galaxy Fold, which boasts a folding screen, had been billed as one of the most significant innovations in the smartphone industry since the original iPhone.

It is set to be retailed at £1,800 and had been initially been scheduled to go on sale in the UK on the 3 May.

Samsung had sent out a number of prototypes to reviewers ahead of its launch.

However, several early reviewers complained that screens broke after upon only a few days of receiving the device.

In a statement, Samsung said: “While many reviewers shared with us the vast potential they see, some also showed us how the device needs further improvements that could ensure the best possible user experience.

To fully evaluate this feedback and run further internal tests, we have decided to delay the release of the Galaxy Fold. We plan to announce the release date in the coming weeks.

Initial findings from the inspection of reported issues on the display showed that they could be associated with impact on the top and bottom exposed areas of the hinge. There was also an instance where substances found inside the device affected the display performance.”

The setback is another PR blow for the South Korean firm, with various of its Galaxy Note 7 smartphones exploding back in 2016.

Shares in Samsung (KRX: 005930) are currently down marginally a -0.33% as of 14:20PM (GMT) on the back of the news.
